If we followed this way of thinking, we would still be flogging convicts with the cat o' nine tails and throwing Christians to the lions. Just because something has been done for a long time by inadequate, stupid and insecure people and is a tradition does not preclude it from being barbaric and cruel. Some tradtions, like rodeos and bullfighting, are medieval and unspeakably cruel and need to be discarded as they have no place in a so-called 'civilised' society.
