George Soros Brings Progressive Grassroots Campaigns to Forefront

The Democratic Party in the United States of America owes at least some measure of allegiance toward George Soros. Soros has been a quiet source of funds for politically progressive and socially justice oriented work for years upon years. Democrats rarely have a billionaire backer in their presence and the re-emergence of George Soros, due to the 2016 election, could have a ripple effect on the future of our political landscape for years to come. In fact, due to Hillary Clinton’s loss against Donald Trump for the presidency, Soros may have just become the most important progressive in the entire country. George Soros had been relatively content to spend the bulk of his time on the sidelines focusing on philanthropy and progressive ideals on a smaller scale. Soros rose up to fame, and notoriety according to right wing publications, during the 2004 Presidential election when he backed Al Gore against the incumbent George W. Bush. Obviously Gore and Soros didn’t make a connection to the White House but it was enough of a run that now everyone knows what Soros is capable of. Soros, a Hungarian born New York resident, had been relatively content on the sidelines until he saw how successful Donald J. Trump was in eliminating progressive ideals from mainstream politics. Soros return will pay huge dividends in the future, primarily on a grassroots level.

The Open Society Foundations has played a huge role in disseminating social justice and progressive ideals throughout the world. Soros founded this philanthropic endeavor in order to bring democracy to as many places as possible through a grassroots approach to problem solving. We saw firsthand how successful these grassroots campaigns can be with the Ferguson protests. When Michael Brown was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson it was the work of George Soros and the Open Society Foundations that led to a closer examination of the case and the subsequent racial divide and tension. Kenneth Zimmerman is the director of the Open Society Foundations and the programs that occur within the United States. Zimmerman essentially summed up Soros and his beliefs by saying, “Our DNA includes a belief that having people participate in government is indispensable to living in a more just, inclusive, democratic society.” Zimmerman went on to say, “Helping groups combine policy, research and data collection with community organizing feels very much the way our society becomes more accountable.”

Progressives and center-democrats alike are uniting around Soros’ approach to progressive problem solving. It will be interesting to see the increased importance that George Soros takes on during President Trump’s time in office.
